Cherkasy's secret beach escape: Ukraine's Maldives and how to visit

There are places in Ukraine whose incredible beauty resembles exotic islands. One such astonishing location is the so-called Ukrainian Maldives, located in the Cherkasy region, not far from the village of Sahunivka. Here are the details of this destination, how to get there, and whether you can vacation there in 2025.
Where Ukrainian Maldives are located
This place attracts travelers with its unique landscapes: crystal-clear turquoise water and white sandy beaches that truly evoke the feeling of being on a tropical island.
It is located in the Cherkasy district of the Cherkasy region, near the village of Sahunivka, approximately 30 kilometers southeast of the city of Cherkasy.
How this turquoise gem was formed
This unique landscape is not entirely a natural wonder in the original sense, although its beauty is undeniable. The village of Sahunivka lies on the banks of the Kremenchuk Reservoir, which was created in 1959–1961 due to the construction of the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Power Plant.
Large-scale sand and material extraction works were carried out for the dam construction.

Probably, these sand pits and the subsequent flooding of the area formed the unique sandy spits and shallow beaches where the water takes on such a bright turquoise hue.
Thus, the Ukrainian Maldives are the result of the interaction between humans and nature, which created a picturesque recreation corner.
What makes the Ukrainian Maldives appealing
The main highlight of this place is the clean, transparent turquoise-colored water and white, fine sand. They evoke strong associations with exotic islands.
Here you can:
Enjoy beach recreation. The sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The shallow waters near the shore make it an ideal spot for family vacations with children.
Swim in clean water. Thanks to the sandy bottom and continuous water renewal, the water here is very clean and pleasant for swimming.
Go camping. This is a favorite camping spot for many locals and tourists from other regions. You can easily drive down to the Dnipro River banks and pitch a tent.

Relax in nature. Pine trees, dunes, and vast waters create perfect conditions for picnics, walks, and fresh-air relaxation.
Fishing. The Dnipro River and Kremenchuk Reservoir are known for their fish stocks, making it a great place for anglers.
Escape crowds and noise. The beaches in Sahunivka are completely wild, which is important to consider when planning your trip. There is no infrastructure, lifeguards, or shops. However, this also means the area is very quiet and peaceful.
