Kyiv views US exit threats as part of diplomatic strategy

Ukraine does not view the strong public statements from US officials as a threat to Washington's withdrawal from peace talks. Instead, they are seen as part of a communication strategy aimed at accelerating diplomatic efforts, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi during a briefing.
"Look, we’ve seen public comments and signals, including from Secretary of State Marco Rubio. We believe this is part of a communication strategy. By sending such signals publicly, the American side is trying to stimulate the peace process and accelerate it," Tykhyi said.
According to him, Ukraine interprets these remarks in that context and has not received any official diplomatic communications, letters, or notes suggesting that the US is preparing to withdraw from the peace process.
"We treat this normally, as signals meant to accelerate and encourage the process in that direction. We’re not dramatizing these signals. We understand that this is a complex process, and what the public sees is only the tip of the iceberg, but diplomacy is ongoing. Unfortunately, part of diplomacy remains closed to the public,” the spokesperson added.
He emphasized once again that Ukraine adheres to its principled positions.
“Diplomacy requires a part of the process to be behind closed doors. Ukraine remains committed to its principles, the Constitution of Ukraine, and our national interests,” Tykhyi said.
US threatens to exit peace talks
Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States may exit the peace process if there are no chances of a swift agreement between Ukraine and Russia in the near future.
Later, President Donald Trump confirmed that the US could indeed exit the talks if either side obstructs the path to peace.
At the same time, Bloomberg reported that the American peace initiative envisions Russia retaining control over the occupied territories of Ukraine.
Trump, however, remains confident that Russian President Vladimir Putin will listen to him and refrain from launching missile and drone strikes on Ukraine.
Yesterday, the US President also said that the coming days will be important for negotiations aimed at resolving the war in Ukraine. He emphasized that the US is "putting a lot of pressure on Russia" to reach a peace agreement.
