Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv was not involved in the attempted assassination of Vladimir Alekseyev, First Deputy Head of Russia's Main Directorate of the General Staff (GRU), according to Reuters.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of being behind the attack on the general, claiming it was aimed at sabotaging peace talks.
However, in a comment to Reuters, Sybiha stated that "Kyiv has nothing to do with the attack."
What happened
On February 6, an unidentified assailant reportedly opened fire several times on Russian Defense Ministry Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev in Moscow.
According to Russian media, the general was shot in the back, and the attacker fled the scene. The incident allegedly took place in the residential building where Alekseyev lives on Volokolamsk Highway.
Following the shooting, Alekseyev was taken to a Moscow hospital, where he was placed in intensive care. Investigators believe a woman who had been waiting for him in the building’s entrance may have carried out the attack.
A detailed profile of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev is available in an RBC report.
Notably, Azov commander Denys "Redis" Prokopenko previously said that Vladimir Alekseyev had led negotiations with Ukrainian defenders at Azovstal and had guaranteed them proper conditions in captivity.
