Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, who was shot in Moscow on Thursday, February 6, previously led negotiations with Ukrainian defenders at the Azovstal steel plant and personally guaranteed them humane conditions in captivity, Azov commander Denys (Redis) Prokopenko stated.

According to Prokopenko, Alekseyev was Russia’s senior representative during negotiations in Mariupol in May 2022, when the Mariupol garrison withdrew from Azovstal.

“Alekseyev promised that Russia would adhere to the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war and guaranteed decent detention conditions for our soldiers. His signature was on the relevant document signed in Mariupol at the time,” the Azov commander said.

In response, Ukrainian defenders also showed goodwill by handing over three Russian prisoners to Alekseyev. They had received medical treatment and were provided with food and water.

The word of an officer born in the Vinnytsia region, who betrayed his homeland, proved to be worthless. The systematic torture of captured Azov fighters, lack of medical care, and starvation confirm this,” Prokopenko wrote.

Crimes against Ukraine

Prokopenko recalled information from Ukraine’s military intelligence stating that Alekseyev is responsible for:

  • preparing intelligence used in strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine;

  • organizing the so-called referendum in the Kherson region.

‘Retribution will find everyone’

The Azov commander stressed that even if Alekseyev survives the assassination attempt, he will never feel safe again.

“One day this case will be finished. No war criminal will ever feel safe. There will be no place on the planet where he can find shelter,” Prokopenko wrote.

Assassination attempt

Earlier, on February 6, an assassination attempt was carried out in Moscow against Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, first deputy head of Russia’s GRU.

The attack occurred near a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway, where the Russian general lives. An unknown assailant shot Alekseyev several times in the back as he approached the entrance and then fled the scene.
