After the nighttime attack by the Shahed, Russian troops massively attacked Ukraine with missiles. The enemy fired missiles from Tu-95MS and Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, and Kyiv and Kharkiv came under a massive attack, where houses are burning and dozens of people are reported injured and dead.

In their usual manner, Russian terrorists targeted residential high-rise buildings, warehouses, and critical infrastructure.

According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, it was a large-scale terrorist attack by Russia against civilian infrastructure. First, there was a kamikaze drone attack, followed by 4 hours of rocket fire. The main impact was on Kyiv and Kharkiv regions.

"They hit residential buildings. Unfortunately, there are dead and injured," he writes.

Situation in the cities

Kyiv

More than 60 cruise missiles and more than 10 Kinzhals attacking Kyiv were destroyed.

According to the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Serhii Popko, the air alert lasted almost 6 hours in total. First, the enemy launched about a dozen Shaheds at the Ukrainian capital. They were followed by more than a dozen Tu-95MS strategic bombers, which launched Kh-101/Kh555/Kh-55 cruise missiles in groups and waves.

At the same time as the missiles were approaching Kyiv, more than ten Mig-31K aircraft launched Kh-47M2 Kinzhal air defense missiles at the capital.

"All Shahed UAVs and more than 6 dozen Kh-101/Kh555/Kh-55 missiles and a dozen Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles were hit by air defense forces and means (the type and number will be finalized by the Air Force)," Popko writes.

As a result of such a massive missile attack in the capital, residential buildings were destroyed, and infrastructure was damaged. There are victims. The consequences are especially terrible in the Solomianskyi district, where multi-story residential buildings caught fire. The fire trapped people on the floors. The State Emergency Service was unblocking and evacuating people.

In particular, as a result of the Russian massive attack on Kyiv, six districts were affected, with seven fires occurring in the Obolonskyi, Pecherskyi, Podilskyi, Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Desnianskyi districts.

Russians shelled a high-rise building in the Solomianskyi district. More than 130 people were evacuated. About 20 people were rescued from the blocked premises.

In total, more than 20 wounded were reported in the capital.

Consequences of the Russian rocket attack in other areas:

  • in the Desnianskyi district, a supermarket preliminarily caught fire;
  • in the Darnytskyi district, non-residential premises were damaged;
  • in the Holosiivskyi district, debris fell in an open area;
  • in the Pecherskyi district debris fell on the roof of a 9-storey residential building; another multi-storey building and a private house;
  • in the Obolonskyi district, a residential building caught fire, and the remains fell on the territory of non-residential buildings and warehouses:
  • in the Sviatoshynskyi district debris fell on non-residential buildings;
  • in the Podilskyi district, a fire broke out on the territory of a market; a gas pipe and water supply lines were damaged about 6 cars caught fire; and the remains fell on non-residential buildings. There is also a possibility of a residential building catching fire.
  • in the Shevchenkivskyi district debris fell on an open area.

Updated 11:19 a.m. The number of people injured in the attack in Kyiv has increased to 33, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said and posted a video from the scene of the shelling of a high-rise building in the Solomianskyi district.

Updated 11:57 a.m. There are 43 injured in the house in the Solomianskyi district.

One woman is dead. 37 people were hospitalized, and six were treated on the spot.

Kyiv region

In the Kyiv region, Boryspil, Bucha, and Fastiv districts suffered.

In the Kyiv region, 16 private houses, 5 apartment buildings, and 75 vehicles were damaged.

Kharkiv

Russia struck the Kharkiv City Center. At least four strikes were reported in the Shevchenkivskyi district. One person was killed. 41 injured. There is a lot of damage to civilian infrastructure.

An advisor to the head of the Kharkiv regional council is also among the victims in Kharkiv.

"We are alive. I managed to hide my baby. Glass cut his face and glass was taken out of his legs. We refused to hospitalize," Natalia Popova writes on Facebook.

Updated at 10:40 a.m. The number of victims in Kharkiv has increased to 44.

A 91-year-old woman died as a result of enemy rocket attacks on the center of Kharkiv. It is also known that 44 were injured. Among them are 5 children: 3 boys aged 9; and girls aged 6 and 13. The children suffered from explosive injuries, bruises, and acute stress reactions.

In addition, 24 women aged 19 to 84 years and 15 men aged 24 to 60 years were injured.

Currently, 28 patients are hospitalized, including 3 children. Doctors assess their condition as moderate.

Updated at 2:47 p.m. Police have established that Russians fired at Kharkiv with Iskander ballistic missiles.

"The shelling of Kharkiv started in the morning around 7:30 a.m. There were at least three explosions. Investigators, experts, and explosive experts are collecting material evidence at the sites of the hits, interviewing witnesses and victims, and documenting the consequences of the shelling. Specialists of the technical investigation department found fragments of an Iskander-M missile," the National Police says in a statement.

At present, apartment buildings, outbuildings, civilian infrastructure, and cars have been damaged in the area.

Investigators opened criminal proceedings under Part 1, Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code.

Russia repeated the attack of December 29

As noted by the Commander of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Mykola Oleshchuk, last night Russians repeated the attack of December 29, both in terms of missile types and the number of air attack vehicles.

As the previous time, the Russians used aerial ballistic Kinzhal along with cruise missiles.

Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets informed that this time Russia fired about 11 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles at Ukraine.

One of the Russian missiles fell in the Voronezh region of Russia during the attack

The Russian Defense Ministry reports that a Russian missile fell on the village of Petropavlovka in the Voronezh region today. The ministry said it was an "abnormal landing of an aircraft munition."

Meanwhile, the local governor says that seven houses were destroyed, but given the video of the destruction published by Telegram channels, it is more serious.

The explosion occurred at about the same time that Russian troops were launching a massive missile strike on Ukrainian territory.

Zelenskyy reports 92 wounded and 4 dead

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's reaction to the massive Russian attack has been released. He also posted a video of the consequences in different regions of Ukraine. According to him, more than 500 rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, utilities, power engineers, and police are involved in the response.

"Kyiv and the region, Kharkiv. At the moment, we know about 92 wounded. All of them are being helped. Unfortunately, four people died. My condolences to the families and friends," Zelenskyy writes.

He notes that our air defense soldiers have been doing an incredible job for the third day. Since December 31, Russian terrorists have already used about 170 Shaheds and dozens of missiles of various types. The vast majority of them were aimed at civilian objects.

Power outages

As a result of the Russian massive missile attack, there is damage to the networks of Ukrenergo and regional power companies in Kyiv and the region.

More than 250,000 consumers are without power, the data is being updated.

The power company explains that the blackouts are related to the hostilities and that there are no plans to apply blackout schedules.

According to DTEK, the Russian attack caused a temporary power outage in some buildings in the Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, Podilskyi, and Obolonskyi districts.

At the same time, in the Kyiv region, there is a partial power outage in the Bucha and Vyshhorod districts.

Ukrainian Air Defense Forces destroyed 72 out of 99 air targets

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi, on the night of January 2, 2024, the Russians repeated a massive attack, as it had done a few days earlier on December 29, 2023.

Civilian and critical infrastructure and industrial and military facilities were attacked. The main focus of the attack is the capital of Ukraine.

In the first wave, the Russians attacked with Shaheds from the southeast, with further movement to different regions of Ukraine. All 35 attack drones were destroyed by Ukrainian air defense, as reported earlier.

In the morning, the enemy used strategic aviation - Tu-95MS bombers. 16 aircraft reached the launch line around 6:00 and launched at least 70 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 air-launched cruise missiles.

In addition, starting at 07:30, ten Kh-47M2 Kinzhal air-to-air missiles were launched from MiG-31K fighters.

The enemy also attacked from the sea with three Kalibr cruise missiles, and from the north with 12 Iskander-M/S-300/S-400 ballistic missiles.

Four Kh-31P anti-radar missiles were used from Su-35 tactical aircraft.

According to preliminary results, the enemy used 99 air attack weapons - missiles of various types. The forces and means of the Ukrainian Air Force, in cooperation with the units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, destroyed 72 air targets, namely:

  • 10 out of 10 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aerial ballistic missiles;
  • 59 out of 70 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles;
  • 3 out of 3 Kalibr cruise missiles.

Russian missile debris fell near the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv

This was announced by the acting head of the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration of Kyiv, Oleksandr Popovtsev.

"If we talk about the Shevchenkivskyi district, today we have one epicenter - in the area of the Dorohozhychi metro station - Teliha Street. The fragments of the downed rocket fell into the park area. Fortunately, no one was injured. We have broken windows in about 10 houses. Utilities are working there. We also have minor missile fragments in the area of the U.S. Embassy," he says.

Shooting down 10 out of 10 Kinzhals is a record, - Zaluzhnyi

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi, today the Air Force of Ukraine shot down 10 out of 10 Kh-47M2 Kinzhals air defense missiles using Patriot air defense systems.

"This is a record. If the missiles hit the target, the consequences will be catastrophic," the Commander-in-Chief notes.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine name the difference between today's attack and the shelling on December 29

According to the spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, Natalia Humeniuk, today's massive Russian attack on Ukraine is different from the December 29 attack. The missile routes were slightly different.

"This attack was aimed at other regions of Ukraine. While last time, on December 29, the south was hit quite hard, this time there were no missiles involved. A very small number of missiles passed through our area of responsibility very quickly, and we didn't even have time to react to their destruction," she explains.

Russian night attack on Ukraine

Last night, Russians attacked Ukraine with drones. In the capital, the falling debris caused fires in residential buildings in the Desnianskyi and Holosiivskyi districts.

In addition, the Ukrainian Air Force announced that it had shot down all the Shaheds launched by the enemy, 35 of them.

In the morning after the drone attack, Russians began to launch missiles at Ukraine en masse.
