The defense of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region remains stable. Russian forces rushed their offensive, overestimated their capabilities, and are taking losses in urban areas, said Viktor Trehubov, head of communications for the Joint Forces grouping.
"There (in Kupiansk - ed.), the situation is actually more optimistic, because the Russians rushed too much and greatly overestimated their strength," Trehubov said.
According to him, the Russians tried to adjust reality to match their own statements but only made things worse.
"In the northern districts of the city, Russians are present, and there they are being destroyed by Ukrainian drones and counteractions," the spokesperson noted.
At the same time, he said, the enemy is trying to increase pressure in other directions.
"The Russians are simultaneously trying to push toward the west of the city, firstly. And secondly, they are trying to bypass the city from the south and apply pressure in the Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi area, attempting to push Ukrainian forces from the left bank of the Oskil," Trehubov said.
Fighting in Kupiansk
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently imagined that Russian forces had supposedly managed to block up to 15 Ukrainian battalions in Kupiansk. Meanwhile, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed that Kupiansk had been "liberated."
Later, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi, commenting on these statements, said that the scale of lies from the Russian leadership is astonishing. He noted that only about 40 Russian radio communication subscribers are detected in Kupiansk.
According to Syrskyi, Ukrainian defenders are clearing the city of Kupiansk of Russian forces. Currently, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are pushing Russians north of the town, as well as from other areas where the enemy remains.
Earlier, Viktor Trehubov, head of communications for the Joint Forces grouping, reported that Russian forces in the Velykoburluk direction regularly attempt to breach the border and have established a small control zone between the cities of Vovchansk and Kupiansk.
