US President’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on Friday, April 25. Their conversation lasted about three hours, stated Putin’s aide Yury Ushakov, according to RIA Novosti.

According to Ushakov, the meeting between Witkoff and Putin took place in the Kremlin. They had a three-hour discussion that he described as "constructive and very useful."

"This conversation helped bring Russian and US positions closer not only on Ukraine but also on a number of other international issues," Ushakov stated.

What was said about Ukraine

Ushakov said Witkoff and Putin discussed the "Ukrainian crisis," specifically "the possibility of resuming direct negotiations between representatives of the Russian Federation and Ukraine."

He also announced upcoming meetings between Russian and American representatives at various levels.

Russia’s Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev, said there was movement toward progress in Putin’s talks with Witkoff.

Witkoff's visits to Moscow

In early April, Witkoff visited Russia, where he met with Russia’s Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev. After that, he held nearly five hours of talks with Putin.

However, amid his visits to Russia, various rumors began circulating in the media about his pro-Russian stance. Reuters reported that, according to Witkoff, the fastest path to peace in Ukraine would be to give Russia ownership of four eastern Ukrainian regions.

Later, Witkoff stated that the “key” to ending the war in Ukraine lies in the so-called “five territories.”

Ahead of today’s visit to Moscow, Bloomberg reported that the US would insist that Russia recognize Ukraine’s right to maintain its own military and defense industry as part of a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said a peace deal with Russia had already been reached, and now it was Kyiv’s turn to respond.
