Japan is reevaluating its defense strategies, drawing on Ukraine’s experience in confronting Russia. Tokyo is showing growing interest in low-cost Ukrainian drones capable of shooting down drones such as the Shahed, according to The Japan Times.

Against the backdrop of rising tensions surrounding Taiwan and China’s military activity, the Japanese military is taking an increasingly close look at the use of Ukrainian drones on the battlefield.

It is precisely the ability of low-cost FPV drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles to effectively destroy significantly more expensive military equipment that is forcing the Japanese to rethink their traditional approach, which was based on expensive high-tech systems.

Japan’s Ministry of Defense is already working on a concept for the widespread use of drones. In particular, the SHIELD system is being developed to defend remote islands, and the budget for fiscal year 2026 allocates 277.3 billion yen (about $1.7 billion) for the development of unmanned platforms.

Cooperation with Ukraine

Despite developing its own technologies, Japan is considering cooperation with Ukraine. According to Japanese media reports, one option is the purchase of Ukrainian attack drones or an exchange of defense technologies, as Ukrainian drones have already proven their effectiveness in real combat conditions.

Experts believe that the lessons of the war in Ukraine could radically change the future shape of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.

Whereas previously preference was given to expensive platforms, the concept of a large number of inexpensive, rapidly producible, and easily replaceable drones is now gaining increasing prominence.

The United States is in talks with Ukraine regarding the testing and possible acquisition of Ukrainian drones and electronic warfare systems.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ukraine's armed forces are currently the most powerful army in Europe, thanks to their combat experience and the support of their allies.
