US President Donald Trump said that the war in Ukraine has turned out to be more complicated than he expected. He noted that he had initially considered it the easiest at a Board of Peace meeting in Washington.

"We have a first year like probably no other ever in our country because we settled eight wars, and I think the ninth to come. It turned out to be a tougher one; I thought that was going to be the easiest one," Trump said.

He added that with war, it is never clear "what’s easy and what’s not so easy."

Trump and the war in Ukraine

Earlier attempts by the US to accelerate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could inadvertently create conditions for a new escalation of the conflict.

US Senator Lindsey Graham believes that the US needs to significantly increase pressure on Russia, as it shows no readiness for negotiations. He suggested that one effective step could be providing Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Trump also expressed his view that, in the long run, the UN could take on a key role in resolving global conflicts.

Geneva talks

On February 17–18, the third round of trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia took place in Geneva, Switzerland, focused on ending the war. The results of this meeting were controversial.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, discussions on the political aspects were extremely difficult, although all three sides demonstrated a constructive approach on military issues.

Despite some optimism on security matters, Axios reports that the political part of the negotiations effectively reached a deadlock.

At the same time, the US has given a more positive assessment of the talks, noting that Ukraine and Russia achieved significant progress during the negotiation process in Geneva.
