US President Donald Trump said that Cuba could be next after the United States overthrows the Ayatollah regime in Iran, Politico reports.
Trump said the US government would play a significant role in the potential fall of the Cuban government. He also hinted that the new leadership of Venezuela could be involved in efforts to bring down the Cuban authorities.
"Venezuela is doing fantastically. (Delcy Rodríguez - ed.) is doing a fantastic job. The relationship with them is great," he said.
Trump also said that instability in Cuba is growing after a change of leadership in Venezuela. He added, "They need help. We are talking to Cuba," and suggested that the worsening situation on the island is partly the result of US pressure, including the halt of Venezuelan oil supplies.
"Well, it’s because of my intervention, intervention that is happening. Obviously, otherwise they wouldn’t have this problem. We cut off all oil, all money, … everything coming in from Venezuela, which was the sole source... Cuba’s going to fall, too," he concluded.
Recently, Trump suggested the possibility of a "friendly" takeover of Cuba, which, according to him, "has nothing today." However, he did not provide any further details.
At the same time, relations between the United States and Cuba have worsened since the beginning of 2026. Amid the new crisis, Trump approved a memorandum to tighten sanctions against the island. Meanwhile, officials in Havana said after threats from the White House that they were not holding any negotiations with the US government.
Members of the US Republican Party recently said that within the next six months, Venezuela, Iran, and Cuba could lose their autocratic regimes and replace them with governments friendly to the United States.
