Iohannis clarifies how long he will stay in office following election annulment
The results of the first round of elections have been annulled in Romania. Current President Klaus Iohannis explained how long he will remain in office, according to News.ro.
Iohannis stated that he will remain in office until the election of a new president of Romania. He explained that parliamentary elections will be recognized as valid, a new Parliament will be convened, consultations with parliamentary parties will be organized, and after the elections, a new government will be formed.
"The new Romanian government will set new dates for the two rounds of the presidential elections. The new government will decide when the presidential elections will take place," he said.
The president also referred to his term in office, citing Article 83, Paragraph 2 of the Romanian Constitution: "The President of Romania exercises his duties until the new president takes office. Conclusion: I will remain in office until the new President of Romania is elected. When the new president is sworn in, I will leave."
The head of state also stated that he does not want to become prime minister but simply wants to complete his mandate.
"No, I will not be the Prime Minister of Romania. I do not want to be the Prime Minister. I just want to finish this mandate," Iohannis added.
Today, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the elections.
