Russia carried out one of the biggest missile and drone attacks on Ukraine on the night of June 15. The main target was Kyiv, where one of the strikes hit the Dormition (also called Assumption) Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in the very center of the city.

RBC-Ukraine shows what the shrine looks like after the Russian strike in the report.

Exterior view

The morning near the Lavra began with the smell of burning and heavy smoke still stretching into the sky. The first thing visible from a distance was the blackened, fire-damaged top of the Dormition Cathedral.

A Russian Shahed drone struck directly into the center of the roof around 1:30 a.m. local time. A large-scale fire broke out, quickly engulfing about 800 square meters. The flames spread through the upper vault structures.

The director of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex, Maksym Ostapenko, explained that the enemy's intention was calculated and brutal.

The occupiers aimed for the wooden dome structures to burn completely, causing the entire roof to collapse into the temple and bury its unique interior.

Moreover, the cathedral's beams were treated with fire-resistant compounds, which raises suspicion that the drone carried a special incendiary mixture designed to intensify the blaze.

Only thanks to firefighters working under the threat of further explosions was the cathedral saved from destruction.

And the danger was real: while rescuers were extinguishing the fire at the Lavra, the Russians cynically struck again.

The second strike hit the 300-year-old Tower of Ivan the Kushnik and the Mystetskyi Arsenal building.

The Tower of Ivan the Kushnik (also known as the Tower of Ioann Kushchnyk) is a historic defensive stone tower from the 17th–18th centuries, part of the architectural complex of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

The President of Ukraine has already confirmed that two Russian drones deliberately targeted the area of Kyiv where the Lavra and the Mystetskyi Arsenal are located.

Interior view and rescue of relics

We enter the Dormition Cathedral. There is a strong smell of burning, and underfoot, there is water from firefighting efforts, as well as scattered fragments of glass.

There is now severe damage to the upper part of the cathedral. There is a threat to the lower sections as well — including murals, frescoes, and the iconostasis.

Experts will only be able to assess the exact damage to the interior after analyzing the condition of the load-bearing structures.

However, a true miracle and result of extraordinary unity was the rescue of sacred relics. As soon as the fire broke out, museum staff, together with police and Lavra monks, rushed to save unique exhibits.

The entire exhibition dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ was carried out of the burning building.

They also managed to evacuate one of the most outstanding and valuable relics of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra — the silver reliquary of Saint Stephen, a unique 18th-century artifact. All these relics are now safe.

'A global barbarism with no justification'

In total, more than five national heritage sites and several locally significant objects were damaged during the night attack. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site under global protection.

The strike provoked outrage across the civilized world. The site was visited today by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy together with government ministers. He stressed that the strikes were deliberate and would have consequences.

Meanwhile, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius, called the strike another Russian crime against humanity. He stressed that Russia shows complete disregard for any sacred sites, including those it claims belong to the Russian world.

The shrine will be restored

Despite serious damage, the Dormition Cathedral will be restored, Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said.

According to her, thanks to the professional actions of rescuers, the total destruction of the shrine was prevented. She noted that Russia tried to destroy the Lavra again — just as happened in 1941 — but this time the cathedral will not need to be rebuilt from its foundations.

The government is already preparing a decision to urgently allocate funds from the reserve budget for roof stabilization and further restoration work.

Ukraine is also expecting a response from international organizations regarding the latest strike on a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund is expected to be more actively involved in coordinating international support.

According to the Prime Minister, Ukrainian businesses and patrons have already offered assistance in restoring the shrine.

It is worth noting that alongside the Lavra and Mystetskyi Arsenal, other sites were also hit that night, including the Palace "Ukraine," the Karpenko-Karyi University, the Organ Music House in Dnipro, the Kharkiv Art Museum, and at the Dovzhenko Film Studio, the oldest costume collection in Ukraine was destroyed.

Ukraine is now urgently initiating international procedures within UNESCO. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the state will demand an immediate and strong global response to what he called Russia's blatant "state barbarism."
