India takes steps to facilitate Ukrine-Russia peace talks - Foreign minister
The war between Ukraine and Russia cannot be resolved through military means. Therefore, the Indian government is taking steps to facilitate dialogue between the parties, according to India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
He said that India is holding discussions with both sides, attempting to understand how peace negotiations can be accelerated.
"This is a kind of exploration that we have been doing. I mean, it’s not that we have a peace plan," Jaishankar said.
The minister added that the government is sharing conversations it has had with one side with the other.
"My sense is both sides appreciate it," he said, adding that there aren't many countries or leaders with the desire or ability to engage with both sides.
These remarks came shortly after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the UN General Assembly session.
India's stance on war
India has shown an interest in a peaceful resolution to the conflict, participating in a world summit. However, its refusal to sign the final communiqué drew some criticism from Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, welcoming India's involvement, expressed hope for a more active role from the country in the peace process. He also suggested that India host the next summit, with the condition that it joins previous agreements.
Ukraine believes India has the potential to become an effective mediator in negotiations with Russia.
According to Politico, Kyiv has chosen Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a key mediator to help bring an end to the war with Russia.
