European NATO allies are expressing doubts that the United States will be able to achieve peace in Ukraine. Because of this, the Alliance has developed an alternative option in case the plan of US President Donald Trump fails, according to Radio Svoboda.
Eight diplomats from NATO member states told the outlet on condition of anonymity that they doubt the constructive role of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the negotiations. They noted that, on the contrary, Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s civilian and energy infrastructure.
The interlocutors said that "European views are present at the negotiating table," despite the absence of EU representatives at the talks in Moscow.
NATO’s alternative plan
One of Radio Svoboda’s sources believes that the Russian President will not be willing to compromise. According to him, Kyiv’s European partners will have to resort to an alternative plan, which consists of:
-
Increasing the amount of weapons for Ukraine on the battlefield;
-
Providing greater support for the Ukrainian economy;
-
Strengthening sanctions against Russia.
A NATO official is convinced that Putin "won’t budge an inch," and, according to him, this will not be because of Ukraine or the US.
They said that the only reason for failure would be Russia’s inflexibility and that the only outcome of the talks the Russians seemed willing to accept was the complete capitulation of Ukraine.
US peace plan
Ukraine and the US have held multiple meetings over the past weeks to discuss a US peace plan. Details of the document remain unknown.
The US created a 28-point peace plan; however, on December 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that after revisions, the document now contains 20 points.
According to media reports, discussions on the US peace plan are ongoing, but the issue of territorial concessions appears to have reached a "deadlock." In particular, Ukraine refuses to hand over the non-occupied territories of the Donbas to Russia.
