According to the Hungarian prime minister, Ukraine and Hungary are making positive progress in resolving issues related to national minority rights and could complete technical negotiations as early as this week.
The Hungarian side says it is ready to hold an official meeting at the highest level if an agreement is reached. Such a meeting could take place as early as the beginning of next week.
Merz also referred to support for Ukraine, saying that while he understands the need to address national minority rights issues, they should not become an obstacle to supporting Ukrainians or distract from the launch of accession talks with Kyiv.
In a comment to RBC-Ukraine, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi responded to a question about whether the Ukrainian-Hungarian consultations were nearing completion.
"The consultations are ongoing. We are working constructively," he stressed.
Ukraine-Hungary talks
On May 20, Ukraine and Hungary launched bilateral expert-level consultations. During the meetings, the sides focused on developing good-neighborly relations, protecting the rights of national minorities, and advancing Ukraine's path toward EU membership.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held talks with Anita Orbán and said Kyiv is ready to begin a new chapter in relations with Budapest.
In addition, Péter Magyar announced the start of technical consultations with the Ukrainian side on guaranteeing the linguistic, educational, and cultural rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia.
At the same time, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence that there are genuine grounds for improving bilateral relations between the two countries.
