Houthis attacked Greek tanker with missiles in Red Sea
Yesterday evening, March 19, Yemeni Houthis attacked the fuel tanker MADO in the Red Sea with anti-ship missiles. According to preliminary data, the vessel did not suffer any damage, reports Reuters.
It is reported that MADO is a tanker for transporting liquefied petroleum gas, which recently sailed under the flag of the Marshall Islands and was heading to Singapore from Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis described it as American, but Equasis's shipping database indicates that it is owned by Naftomar Shipping & Trading Co Ltd of Greece.
Attacks by Yemeni Houthis on ships in the Red Sea
Since November 2023, Houthi rebels in Yemen have been regularly attacking commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea with drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles. The first attacks began immediately after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
In response to numerous attacks, on January 12, the US and the UK launched missile strikes for the first time on Houthi military targets in Yemen. Since then, the Western coalition has regularly targeted Houthi military objects in Yemen, but the terrorists continue to attack ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
On March 12, the Italian frigate Duilio destroyed two Houthi drones in the Red Sea as part of a self-defense operation.
On the same day, the Houthis launched rockets at the container ship Pinocchio in the Red Sea. It was flying the flag of Liberia and is owned by the Singapore-registered company OM-MAR 5 INC.
On March 14, the American military successfully detected and destroyed four drones and one surface-to-air missile launched by Yemeni Houthi rebels.
On March 16, the Houthis shelled a tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas under the flag of the Marshall Islands. The captain reported two explosions near the vessel as it sailed near the coastline of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah.
