Italian destroyer downs 2 Houthi drones in Red Sea
The Italian destroyer Duilio shot down two unmanned aerial vehicles of the Houthis in the Red Sea as part of implementing the principle of self-defense, reports ANSA.
"Congratulations to the crew of the destroyer Caio Duilio, which shot down two drones in the Red Sea as part of the EU Aspides mission. Italian military personnel ensure freedom of navigation and protect our merchant vessels. I am proud of our sailors," said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani.
EU mission in the Red Sea
In February, the European Union launched a military-naval mission in the Red Sea called Eunavfor Aspides to protect navigation in this region.
On March 8, it became known that the Netherlands would send the frigate Zr. Ms. Tromp with 200 servicemen to the Red Sea to protect civilian navigation and join the EU initiative. The government of the country is expected to announce the official decision on the dispatch of the ship today.
Also on March 3, it became known that the Italian ship Caio Duilio had started protecting trade routes from aerial attacks by Yemeni Houthis. On the same day, a ship of the Italian Navy shot down a drone approaching the vessel in the Red Sea.
