The US assumes that as part of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, a demarcation will be carried out. It will not satisfy either side, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated at a press conference.

According to him, "realism" is an important part of the conversation in the context of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Hegseth believes that referring to "realism," such as the impossibility of returning to Ukraine’s 2014 borders, is not a concession to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"It’s a recognition of the hard power realities on the ground, after a lot of investment in sacrifice, first by the Ukrainians and then by allies, and then a realization that a negotiated peace is going to be some sort of demarcation that neither side wants," he added.

How the US sees peace between Ukraine and Russia

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that Russia’s war against Ukraine would not end with one side achieving all of its "maximalist goals."

According to Rubio, both Ukraine and Russia will have to make concessions to reach an end to the war.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated yesterday that the US considers Ukraine's return to its 2014 borders "unrealistic."

The head of the Pentagon also called Ukraine’s NATO membership "unrealistic" as an outcome of a peace agreement.
