Trump's nominee for US Secretary of State makes statement on Russia's war against Ukraine
Marco Rubio, a candidate for the US Secretary of State position under Donald Trump, stated that to end the war in Ukraine, concessions would need to be made. This would apply to both countries, CNN reports.
Rubio said that it is "unrealistic to believe" that Ukraine can push Russian forces back to where they were before the 2022 invasion, and emphasized that the official US position should be that the war must end.
"It’s … unrealistic to believe that somehow a nation the size of Ukraine, no matter how incompetent and no matter how much damage the Russian Federation has suffered as a result of this invasion, there’s no way Ukraine is also going to push these people all the way back to where they were on the eve of the invasion, just given the size dynamic," he said.
The politician stated that he does not believe Ukraine has the manpower to fully push Russia out.
"The problem that Ukraine is facing is not that they’re running out of money, is that they’re running out of Ukrainians," Rubio said.
He also added that he and Trump agree on the need to end the war, criticizing the Biden administration for not setting a clear "end goal" for the war.
Rubio emphasized that the war between Russia and Ukraine needs to be stopped and that all countries will have to make "concessions."
"There will have to be concessions made by the Russian Federation, but also by the Ukrainians and the United States," he stressed.
On January 14, newly elected US President Donald Trump made a statement about a potential meeting with Putin.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg has already learned of possible demands from Russian President Vladimir Putin in negotiations with Trump.
