Neither Ukraine nor Russia is likely to achieve their "maximalist goals" as a result of the war. Achieving peace will require hard work, states US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with journalist Megyn Kelly.

Rubio emphasized that both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin have their own internal interests.

"If you imagine you're Ukrainian, and the Russians have made you suffer so much, and now you're going to let them keep the land? I mean, people would be upset about that, you would understand it," the Secretary of State added.

However, according to him, there are also the mature realities of life. They indicate that both sides are paying a heavy price for the war and both sides are interested in ending the conflict.

"It's (war - ed.) not going to end with the maximalist goals of either side, and there's going to have to be a lot of hard work done. And I think only the United States under the leadership of President Trump can make this possible, but it will not be easy, and it will take some time. But it's certainly something I know he is strongly committed to seeing happen," Rubio stressed.

Trump could end the war

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that US President Donald Trump could end Russia's war against Ukraine faster than anyone else in the world.

According to the Ukrainian leader, this is because Trump has significant influence over Russia.

At the same time, Trump had previously threatened to impose new tariffs, duties, and sanctions on Russia if Moscow refuses to reach an agreement to end the war.
