Sanctions against RF should affect grain from occupied territories - President of Latvia
Grain and other food products from the occupied territories of Ukraine should be considered in sanctions against Russia, this was stated by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, citing a joint press conference with the presidents of Ukraine, Switzerland, and the Prime Minister of Lithuania.
"I think the issue of grain or other food products originating from the occupied territories of Ukraine that were seized by Russia should be taken into account in the sanction mechanism. Some aspects are already considered," he stated.
The President of Latvia also considers it crucial how the implementation of sanctions is coordinated at the European level and how the origin of certain products is verified.
"And we need to work on this issue," he emphasized.
Rinkēvičs reminded that sanctions against the Russian Federation do not apply to food products and medical supplies.
Sanctions against Russia
The EU has already approved 11 packages of sanctions against Russia. Restrictions include, for example, products that can be used in the production of tools. In particular, sanctions have been imposed on individuals and legal entities responsible for the invasion of Ukraine and assisting in continuing the war.
Currently, the EU plans to coordinate the 12th package of anti-Russian sanctions, which includes new lists of personal restrictions, as well as export sanctions, including those related to diamonds.
Recently, the European Union, together with the European Commission, presented its proposals for the 12th package of sanctions against Russia to the EU Council.
