Operation of the United States and Israel in Iran may serve as a "good signal" for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is a reminder of how dictatorship ends, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a comment to journalists.

What Zelenskyy said

The President recalled how Russia already showed itself as an ally during events in Syria, when Putin turned out unable to save the Assad regime.

In Zelenskyy's opinion, the situation is now repeating.

"In the same way, in my view, they have now also demonstrated their weakness, that is, as allies they are worthless," the head of state explained.

Zelenskyy explained why Moscow cannot help anyone: all the armed forces of Russia are concentrated in Ukraine.

"They have no more forces. And what is happening in Iran, it seems to me, is a good signal so that Putin looks at how dictatorship ends," the president concluded.

What is known about the situation in the Middle East

On February 28, 2026 United States, together with Israel, launched a large-scale military operation against Iran, carrying out a series of airstrikes on facilities in Iran, including military infrastructure in Tehran and other cities.

The American side called this campaign a response to the threats of the regime of Iran and stated its intention to undermine its ability to pursue an aggressive policy.

Iranian state media confirmed the death of Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking officials as a result of strikes. This caused outrage in Tehran and statements about the intention to carry out the "most powerful offensive operation." Iran, in turn, attacked the Arab states of the Persian Gulf.

Later information also appeared about a strike on a nuclear facility in the Iranian city of Natanz. The International Atomic Energy Agency has already reacted to this.

Russia and Iran, after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, deepened cooperation. Iranian Shahed drones are actively used by Russia for strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. Therefore, Zelenskyy called strikes on Iran fair.

At the same time, Russia lost its long-time ally — Syrian president Assad — after in December 2024 his regime fell under pressure from rebels. At that time, Russia did not help the authorities of Syria.
