Germany to hand over additional missiles for Iris-T to Ukraine as soon as possible - MoD
Germany will support Ukraine with additional guided missiles for the Iris-T air defense systems in the short term, states German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, according to N-TV.
Pistorius explained that these missiles were initially intended for the Bundeswehr but are now being redirected directly from production to Ukraine.
“We are supplying Ukraine first, before replenishing our own stocks,” he explained.
He emphasized that this decision was made in response to Russia's ongoing airstrikes, including the use of cluster munitions. The politician did not specify an exact number.
According to SPIEGEL, this involves 48 missiles with a total value of around 70 million euros. Germany has already supplied Ukraine with three Iris-T systems, which are considered very effective against Russian air attacks, but ammunition supply remains a challenge.
At the same time, the minister announced further training for Ukrainian soldiers in Germany. The target for this year is 10,000, and since November 2022, more than 19,000 Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel have already completed training in Germany.
At the end of December, Germany delivered a new package of military support to Ukraine, which included air defense systems (IRIS-T, Patriot, and others).
