The German prosecutor's office has charged three individuals with acting as foreign agents. They are suspected of spying on a Ukrainian, possibly with the intent to assassinate him, Reuters reports.

An Armenian, identified as Vardges I., organized the operation on behalf of Russian intelligence, involving a Ukrainian, Robert A., and a Russian, Arman S.

In June 2024, the Ukrainian veteran was to be lured to a meeting at a café in central Frankfurt, where the suspected Russian agents planned to identify the man and gather more information about him.

However, the veteran reported the matter to the German police and did not attend the meeting. Subsequently, the three suspects were arrested and placed in custody. They have been charged with cooperating with a foreign intelligence service.

The prosecutor's office notes that the espionage operation was likely preparation for further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including the assassination of the target individual.

All three suspects were arrested on June 19, 2024 — the day of the planned meeting — and have been in custody since.

We previously reported that the German prosecutor's office conducted a search of a house in Brandenburg on suspicion of supporting Russian militants in the so-called Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) and Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).
