Germany blocks sale of weapons to Israel - Politico
Germany's leadership has blocked the sale of new batches of weapons to Israel due to concerns over the potential use of the arms against civilians, Politico informs.
As the news agency notes, the decision on weapon exports in Germany is made by the Federal Security Council, which consists of senior government officials.
However, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock abstained during the approval of the weapon export to Israel, demanding assurances that the weapons would not be used for attacks against civilians.
"Arms deliveries to Israel are about compliance with the rules of international humanitarian law. The reason for requesting such a commitment is that a German administrative court could otherwise put a stop to it," an informed source told Politico.
The source reminded Politico that several lawsuits have already been filed against the German government, demanding a halt to weapon exports to Israel. These lawsuits argued that the export violates the law, which states that such weapons cannot be used for targeting civilian objectives.
Supply of German weapons to Israel
In September we reported that Germany had suspended the export of military armaments to Israel due to lawsuits regarding violations of humanitarian law.
At the same time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently stated that Germany would continue to provide weapons to Israel.
