Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to divert attention from his own weakness with statements about a quick end to the war in Ukraine, states German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Mykhailo Fedorov.

He noted that it is the head of the Kremlin who is responsible for ending the war and the terror against Ukraine’s civilian population.

Boris Pistorius said that he believes Vladimir Putin is currently trying to divert attention from his own weakness through his behavior, noting that at that moment he can hardly boast any territorial gains and that his army was repeatedly losing parts of the occupied territories.

The German defense minister added that the Russian leader could simply end the war in Ukraine if he truly sees a way out of the conflict.

Pistorius said that any attentive observer would immediately ask whether Vladimir Putin, if he truly sees the end of the war, could simply bring it to an end, adding that the moment of ending it would be entirely in his hands, but that he continues to put forward conditions, as always.

War can be ended right now

The minister stressed concerns that Putin’s statements are another maneuver to mislead and part of Russia’s hybrid warfare. He added that over the past years, whenever a ceasefire or peace was discussed, Vladimir Putin ultimately acted very differently from what had been agreed.

Boris Pistorius emphasized that, in his view, if Vladimir Putin wanted to end his war of aggression against Ukraine, he could do so very easily — either by withdrawing his troops or by initiating concrete negotiations without preconditions.

What preceded this

On Saturday, May 9, during his speech at the parade in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a number of statements about the war against Ukraine. According to him, the Russian-Ukrainian war is allegedly approaching its end.

"I think the matter is coming to an end," the head of the Kremlin emphasized.

Recently, Vladimir Putin also said he was ready to hold a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, not only in Moscow but also in a third country. He called the signing of a final agreement the main condition.

The Institute for the Study of War, responding to the Kremlin leader’s statements about a quick end to the war in Ukraine, said that there are currently no signs that Russia intends to end its aggression.
