Finland investigates Russian shadow fleet tanker over damaged power cable – FT
Finnish authorities are investigating an oil tanker potentially linked to a damaged power cable incident. The tanker is reportedly part of Russia's shadow fleet, the Financial Times reports.
According to the media outlet, the Eagle S tanker was detained by Finnish authorities after the disconnection of the Estlink 2 underwater power cable in the Gulf of Finland. The tanker, registered in the Cook Islands, transports oil from Russia to Egypt and was reportedly spotted near the cable.
The Financial Times notes that this old tanker, part of Russia's shadow fleet, is now the focus of Finland's investigation. Sources indicate that authorities are examining whether the Eagle S may have severed three communication cables in the Gulf of Finland.
Damage to underwater cables
Yesterday, reports emerged about damage to the Estlink 2 underwater power cable connecting Finland and Estonia. Finnish officials have not ruled out the possibility of deliberate damage to the underwater power line in the Gulf of Finland, where two vessels were seen.
Earlier, on November 18, the C-Lion1 underwater data cable between Finland and Germany was severed. On the same day, another damaged underwater communication cable was discovered in the Baltic Sea, linking Lithuania and Sweden.
