Overnight on May 28, explosions were heard in several towns in the Moscow region as air defense systems operated against drones flying toward the Russian capital. Operations at Moscow airports were temporarily suspended, according to the Moscow Mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, and Russian channels.

According to the mayor, air defense forces reportedly shot down twelve drones flying toward Moscow.

Initially, he reported the downing of 4 drones, then 2 more, followed by another two, and later two separate reports of single drone interceptions.

"The Ministry of Defense’s air defense continues to repel drone attacks. Two drones flying toward Moscow have been destroyed," Sobyanin wrote on social media at 01:18 AM.

In each post about the drone attack repulsion, he noted that emergency service specialists are working at the sites where drone debris has fallen.

Explosions in the Moscow region

Meanwhile, Russian media report loud explosions heard in Podolsk and Troitsk in the Moscow region.

Additionally, footage surfaced online showing the nighttime bangs in the Moscow region, where air defense operations were ongoing.

As reported by the channel Baza, residents of Ramenskoye in the Moscow region also reported explosions, allegedly linked to the drone attack.

Airport closures

Around midnight, the Domodedovo airport in the Moscow region activated the Carpet plan. Rosaviatsia announced restrictions on landings and departures there, allegedly to avoid threats.

Similar restrictions were later imposed at Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports.

Drone attacks near Moscow

In May, Russia reported multiple drone attacks. For example, on May 25, drones targeted Moscow and the Moscow region, prompting the temporary closure of three airports due to strike threats.

On the night of May 25, Moscow’s air defense reported engaging drones heading toward the city.

Also, on the night of May 6, strike drones attacked Moscow, the Moscow region, and four other Russian regions. The Carpet plan was activated in Moscow airports. During the day of May 6, drones heading toward Moscow were also recorded.

On the night of May 7, Moscow faced another drone attack, and several airports again implemented the Carpet plan.
