Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the city is allegedly under attack by multiple drones. Due to this, three Russian airports have temporarily suspended operations, reports RIA Novosti.

Around 5 PM Moscow time today, Russia's Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsiya) announced temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft at airports in Moscow and the Moscow region:

  • Vnukovo;
  • Domodedovo;
  • Zhukovsky.

Sobyanin said Russian air defenses reportedly shot down a drone flying toward Moscow. He added that emergency service specialists are working at the site where the debris fell.

Later, the Moscow Mayor claimed that two more drones targeting the city were shot down. By 5:50 PM, the mayor said a fourth drone had allegedly been shot down.

Attacks on Russia

This marks the second time today that Russian officials have reported drone attacks on Moscow. Overnight on May 25, air defense systems were reportedly activated in the Moscow region to intercept drones said to be heading toward the capital.

Several Moscow airports also faced temporary restrictions overnight.

In recent weeks, Russia has repeatedly claimed air attacks near Moscow and in surrounding regions. On the night of May 24, for instance, a drone strike reportedly targeted the Energiya plant in the Lipetsk region. That same facility had already come under attack the day before, on May 23.

Earlier, on the night of May 22, Russian officials reported a massive drone attack. They said drones targeted both Moscow and regions along the Ukrainian border.

In total, drones reportedly struck seven regions across Russia that night.
