The European Commission announced a call to join the creation of a new EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance, bringing together manufacturers, innovators, startups, and end users of defense systems, according to the European Commission.
As noted in the statement, the Alliance will support the development of advanced technologies in the field of unmanned systems and countermeasures to them based on the Defense Readiness Roadmap 2030 and the corresponding European Commission action plan.
The European Commission explained that the initiative will bring together participants from EU countries, the European Economic Area, and the European Free Trade Association, as well as Ukraine.
The Alliance is expected to strengthen European capabilities in drones and counter-drone systems.
Creation of the Alliance was a response to repeated violations of the airspace of EU countries by unmanned aerial vehicles, which demonstrated the need to develop modern protection systems.
Founding members will be selected from candidates with experience in the defense drone sector from the EU and Ukraine. They will form the first board of the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance and will play a key role in shaping activities and priorities of the Alliance.
The Alliance is expected to begin operations in the coming months. Applications will be accepted until May 25, 2026.
Drones in Europe
As is known, recently Europe has faced a wave of mysterious unmanned aerial vehicles recorded over airports, critical infrastructure, and military bases (Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands), causing airspace closures and increasing security risks.
A possible reason is considered to be increased activity of Russian intelligence or sabotage.
Earlier, Ukraine stated its readiness to help partners in drone production using its own combat experience.
