EU prepares sanctions against Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia - Bloomberg
The European Union is preparing to adopt a package of sanctions against Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia. The bloc intends to approve this move by the time EU leaders gather for a summit in Brussels at the end of this month, according to Bloomberg.
The first set of measures will target about a dozen individuals and organizations, including engineering, metallurgical, and aviation companies, according to the agency's sources.
The EU's restrictions will be the first response to missile deliveries, and additional lists are being considered.
EU sanctions require the support of all member states, and plans could change before they are finalized.
Iranian missile supplies to Russia
According to US and European estimates, Iran delivered ballistic missiles to Russia last month. This triggered US, Germany, France, and the UK sanctions. Iran has also provided Moscow with hundreds of strike drones and other weapons during Russia’s 2.5-year war against Ukraine, but the transfer of ballistic missiles indicates a deeper involvement in the conflict.
British intelligence reported that Moscow received Fath-360 missiles, which can hit targets within a 120-kilometer radius. With such weapons, Russia will be able to attack military and civilian targets near the front line while reserving its domestically produced missiles for long-range strikes.
Last week, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that they attacked a Russian weapons depot, which included a cache of Iranian missiles. The strike was carried out on a depot near Kotluban in the Volgograd region, approximately 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
