A Democratic victory in the US could have repercussions far beyond the country's borders. The European Parliament anticipates positive changes for Ukraine and European policy, according to Christel Schaldemose, Vice President of the European Parliament.
The European politician notes that the unexpected results of the US election give cause for cautious optimism. At the same time, she emphasizes that this does not mean the situation in Europe will automatically improve.
Among the areas where the election results could have a positive impact, Schaldemose cites support for Ukraine, the green transition, and Europe's relations with other countries around the world.
However, in her view, the European Union should not rely solely on external political changes. The EU must continue to strengthen its own positions and move toward greater autonomy. This course, the Vice President of the European Parliament emphasized, is non-negotiable.
Thus, the European Parliament views the results of the US elections as a potentially positive sign for Europe and Ukraine, but not as a guarantee of rapid change.
US elections
According to the results of the midterm elections held on November 3, 2026, the Democratic Party gained control of both chambers.
In the House of Representatives, the Democrats won 227 seats out of the 218 needed for a majority. In the Senate, they also outnumbered the Republicans, winning 54 seats to 42.
US President Donald Trump has already responded to the election results. He acknowledged his party's defeat and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the Democrats.
At the same time, the US leader makes it clear that he will not support initiatives with which he disagrees. In particular, Trump reminds everyone that he has the power of veto, which he can use to block bills passed by Congress.
