The European Union considers the phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin as the beginning of a process. Brussels expects to see further developments, Sky News reports, citing European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho.

"Yesterday's phone call between President Trump and President Putin marks the beginning of a process, as it has with other issues," Pinho said at a daily briefing.

European Commission spokesperson added that further meetings will follow, such as at the Munich Security Conference, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will be present.

According to Pinho, the EU will closely monitor how this process, initiated by Trump, unfolds.

"So we truly see this (Trump-Putin conversation - ed.) as part of an initial process, and we will see in the next steps how it develops," a European high-ranking official emphasized.

Trump-Putin call

On February 12, Trump and Putin held a phone conversation, discussing, among other topics, the war in Ukraine. Following this, the US President announced plans to meet with the Russian leader, possibly in Saudi Arabia.

The Kremlin stated that Trump and Putin had instructed their aides to begin preparations for the meeting.

That same day, Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

A day later, Trump said he had "great negotiations" with Russia and Ukraine, claiming there is a "good possibility to end the war.
