US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that at this stage, he has no plans to run for president in the 2028 US elections, according to NBC News.

As media note, Rubio is one of the few U.S. government officials not present at the Republican Party convention in Dallas.

Instead, he is on a diplomatic trip to Colombia, where a journalist asked him whether he is one of the strongest potential Republican candidates for the 2028 elections.

In response, Rubio said he is focused on his extensive work in the administration as a Cabinet member and national security advisor.

When asked whether he dreams of becoming U.S. president, the Secretary of State replied:

"Well, I don't know what the future holds for me, but at this point, I have no such plans. I am 100% focused on my job," Rubio answered.

An NBC News source also told the outlet that Rubio had considered the question and stated he currently does not plan to run for president—but "left the door open" for such a possibility.

What else is important to know

In April 2026, media reported that within the Republican ranks, there was growing support for Marco Rubio to become the next Republican presidential candidate. Some believe he is a more moderate, younger, and calmer choice than President Donald Trump or Vice President JD Vance.

At the same time, reports in the summer indicated that Rubio would not run for US president in 2028 if Vance declares his candidacy. However, some other media outlets reported that Trump has doubts and is uncertain whether Vance has all the necessary qualities to become the presidential candidate.

Also, at the end of August, NBC News reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had allegedly discussed the possibility of running for president. However, the Pentagon later stated that this was false.
