US President Donald Trump held talks today, February 12, with Russian President Vladimir Putin. They discussed, in particular, the war against Ukraine, according to the American leader on Truth Social and Russian media.
According to Trump, the conversation with Putin "was lengthy and highly productive." During the talks, the parties discussed Russia's war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the strength of the dollar, and other topics.
The US president clarified that he and the Russian leader "reflected" on how the US and Russia "successfully fought together" during World War II and how Russia "lost" tens of millions of people.
"We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together. But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine," Trump added.
Trump noted that he agreed with Putin to work "very closely" together, including mutual visits.
Moscow confirms talks
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Trump and Putin held a phone conversation lasting nearly an hour and a half.
During the talks, the two leaders discussed a potential prisoner exchange between the US and Russia. The American leader "assured" that Washington would honor the agreements reached.
According to Peskov, Putin agreed with Trump that a long-term resolution of Russia's war against Ukraine could be achieved through negotiations.
The Kremlin spokesperson also stated that Putin and Trump agreed to arrange a "personal meeting."
"The president of Russia invited the US president to visit Moscow and expressed readiness to host American officials in Russia on matters of mutual interest, including, of course, the issue of the Ukrainian settlement," he added.
