US President Donald Trump stated he had had "great talks" with Russia and Ukraine on February 12, saying there is a good possibility to end the war.
"Great talks with Russia and Ukraine yesterday. Good possibility of ending that horrible, very bloody war," Trump wrote.
On Wednesday, February 12, the US President had a phone call with Putin, discussing several topics, including the war in Ukraine.
Trump also announced plans to meet with Putin, suggesting that the first meeting could take place in Saudi Arabia in the not-too-distant future.
That same day, Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the war. They agreed to maintain further contact.
Europe’s reaction to Trump’s calls
Trump's call with Putin was met with mixed reactions in Europe. Western media reported that the EU was not aware of this move by the US leader. Britain, commenting on the situation, emphasized that Ukraine must be at the center of any negotiations.
Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius insisted that Europe must be part of any talks on Ukraine if the US wants to involve EU countries in a peacekeeping mission. He also warned Washington against making concessions on Ukraine before negotiations even begin.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that Trump’s conversation with Putin "gives an impression" of the start of negotiations.
