On Monday, June 8, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in response to the latest massive Russian attack on Ukraine. The meeting was initiated at the request of Kyiv, states the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha.
"The latest wave of Russian strikes is yet another reminder that Moscow continues to choose escalation over peace, and terror over diplomacy," wrote the Ukrainian Foreign Minister.
He emphasized that sustained international pressure on Russia remains necessary to uphold the UN Charter and to advance Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal to Russia for an end to the war.
"We thank our partners for their continued support and contribution to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace," Sybiha concluded.
Ukraine calls on Russia for peace
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote an open letter to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In this letter, the head of state stated Kyiv's readiness to end the war through direct negotiations and proposed setting a date and place for a meeting to cease hostilities.
For his part, Putin, responding to questions at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), where he was asked about this letter, said he saw no point in meeting. According to him, it only makes sense for Ukraine to stop Russia's advance.
Also on the night of June 2, Russia carried out another combined attack on Ukraine. As a result of missile and drone strikes, destruction of civilian infrastructure was recorded, especially in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv.
