Defense Intelligence chief: Control over Boyko Towers means control over trade route
Control over the Boyko Towers ensures control over the entire northern and northwestern part of the Black Sea, states the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov.
"This is control over the entire northern and northwestern part of the Black Sea. These are not just towers; these are points where certain equipment was located, controlling which one side or the other can say - the trade route is ours," said Budanov.
He noted that these towers were occupied for a long time, but now they are controlled by Ukraine.
Boyko Towers
The Boyko Towers are offshore gas and oil drilling platforms near the coast of Crimea in the Black Sea. They received their name after an article in 2011 by Oleksii Shalaiskyi and Yurii Nikolov titled Tower for Boyko, which reported on the purchase of platforms at inflated prices by the Ministry of Energy, headed by Yurii Boyko.
Russia seized them in 2014 and began using them for military purposes with the onset of a full-scale invasion, including as helicopter pads and for placing radar systems.
According to British intelligence, the Boyko Towers in the Black Sea are strategic assets.
In September 2023, Ukraine regained control over the Boyko Towers in the Black Sea. The military intelligence dubbed the operation as another slap in the face of the enemy.
