Counteroffensive of Ukrainian Armed Forces - Offensive on three fronts
Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to carry out counteroffensive operations on three sectors of the front. Ukrainian Armed Forces have made progress in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. Russian forces have maintained their positions in Urozhaine, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Situation in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions
The Ukrainian General Staff has reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are continuing their offensive operations in the Bakhmut, Berdyansk, and Melitopol sectors. Geolocation data indicates that Ukrainian military units have advanced to the northeast of Robotyne (located 10 kilometers south of Orikhove). This advancement suggests that the Armed Forces of Ukraine may have achieved success in the adjacent areas, possibly capitalizing on weeks of sustained Ukrainian activity in the wooded regions to the northeast of the settlement.
On August 16, it was confirmed that Ukrainian forces successfully liberated Urozhaine (situated 9 kilometers south of Velyka Novosilka) on the border between the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. According to statements from the Russian Federation, Russian units in this region are withdrawing. It is likely that Ukrainian forces control a significant portion of the populated area.
Luhansk region
On August 16, Russian military forces engaged in offensive operations along the Kupiansk-Svatove line within the Luhansk region. Despite these actions, there have been no confirmed advancements. Russian sources claim progress in the vicinity of Synkivka (8 km northeast of Kupiansk) from the north, yet this assertion lacks visual confirmation as per the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian troops launched unsuccessful offensive maneuvers to the south-east of Vilshana (15 km northeast of Kupiansk), near Synkivka, and to the east of Petropavlivka (7 km east of Kupiansk).
Situation near Bakhmut
Russian military forces have persisted in their attacks near Bakhmut. The Ukrainian General Staff has reported that Russian troops engaged in unsuccessful offensive actions near Bohdanivka, situated 8 kilometers northwest of Bakhmut. This assertion, however, lacks visual confirmation of Russian counterattacks in the specified direction, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
Ukrainian forces, in the meantime, continued their efforts to repel Russian advances near Avdiivka, Marinka (on the southwestern outskirts of Donetsk), and Krasnohorivka (west of Donetsk).
Liberation of Urozhaine
On August 16, Ukrainian Military Forces successfully liberated the village Urozhaine in Donetsk region. Following this accomplishment, Ukrainian Forces have extended their counteroffensive actions along the administrative border between Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.
