Ukraine and Poland must reach an agreement on historical facts in order for reconciliation to take place between them. At present, the two sides have different opinions, as stated by Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in a brief interview with RBC-Ukraine.

In response to a question about the problems of the historical past, Radosław Sikorski noted that, first and foremost, the sides need to reach an agreement "on the facts."

"We can have different opinions. Contrary to what those who seek to sow discord between us want us to believe, we are moving in the right direction," he assured.

Sikorski added that historians have largely reached an agreement on the facts that took place in the past and were painful for both nations.

"Minister Sybiha and I, and also our churches, have framed the issue in terms of Christian responsibility for burying the dead. And we have made progress, including decisions in the last few days, which are helping to turn down emotions. And it's helping to intensify the Polish-Ukrainian collaboration. And I'm very happy about that," he concluded.

The so-called Volhynia massacre, better known as the Volhynia tragedy, still divides Poles and Ukrainians, even though the tragedy between the two nations occurred more than 80 years ago. Many political forces, particularly in Poland, continue to speculate on the tragedy.

In 2025, Poland once again decided to raise the issue of the Volhynia tragedy at the state level. The differences in how Ukrainians and Poles view those events, and the extent to which they may affect relations between the two countries today, were discussed in an interview with historian Oleksandr Zinchenko for RBC-Ukraine.
