China threatens to never give up using force against Taiwan
China has said that it seeks a peaceful reunification with Taiwan. But they threatened to never give up the use of force, Reuters reports.
“We are willing to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and endeavour. But we will never commit ourselves to renouncing the use of force,” says Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office.
He adds that if the island dares to take the risk, it will lead to its own destruction, regardless of how many troops Taiwan has or how many weapons it acquires, and whether or not external forces intervene.
“Our actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity will not cease for a moment,” the spokesperson emphasizes.
Chinese state media reported on Wednesday, October 16, that Chinese leader Xi Jinping had arrived the day before on Dongshan Island in Fujian Province. This is a significant place because, in 1953, China repelled an attempted invasion of the island by the Taiwanese military.
Conflict between China and Taiwan
China considers Taiwan its territory and calls the island's government separatist. Taiwan, in turn, calls itself a separate state.
Since last week, the conflict between the parties has flared up again. China launched large-scale military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. The island condemned Beijing's actions and said it was ready to respond to any steps. Later, Taiwan said that Chinese ships had entered closed waters.
The Pentagon responded to China's actions and reminded that the United States was ready to maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
