Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with the new US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to discuss important matters concerning the development of China-US relations, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The call took place today, January 24.

Wang Yi mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping had an important phone conversation with US President Donald Trump last Friday and reached a number of consensus.

The Minister emphasized that the two leaders had set the direction and tone for China-US relations. He stressed the importance of implementing the key consensus reached between the two presidents, which includes:

  • Maintaining communication,
  • Resolving differences,
  • Expanding cooperation,
  • Promoting the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-US relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,
  • Finding the right path for China and the United States.

Additionally, Wang Yi outlined China’s principled stance on the Taiwan issue, urging the US to handle it cautiously. He reaffirmed that Taiwan has been a part of China since ancient times and stressed that Beijing will never allow Taiwan to be separated from China.

Secretary Rubio acknowledged the significance of US-China relations, describing them as the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st century. He stated that these relations will determine the future of the world.

During a speech in Davos yesterday, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that China would assist in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. He mentioned his recent phone call with Xi Jinping, initiated by the Chinese leader.

In response, China welcomed Trump’s intentions to bring an end to the "Ukraine crisis," reaffirming its support for peace efforts.
