China welcomes Trump's intent to end 'Ukraine crisis'
China welcomes US President Donald Trump’s intention to resolve the "Ukraine crisis" and pledges to continue facilitating negotiations while staying in contact with all parties, stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
During a briefing, Mao commented on Trump’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he expressed hope for China’s assistance in ending the war in Ukraine.
She emphasized that dialogue and negotiations are the only viable paths to resolving the "Ukraine crisis," which is how China refers to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"We are happy to see that all parties play a constructive role and build conditions for de-escalation and the political settlement of the crisis," Mao Ning said.
Journalists also asked Mao to confirm Trump’s claim that he discussed Russia’s war against Ukraine with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
"On the Ukraine crisis, China will stay committed to promoting talks for peace and we are willing to maintain communication with all parties," she added.
China's position on the war
China claims a neutral position on the war in Ukraine. However, Beijing continues to cooperate with Russia in the economic sphere and trade and even strengthens relations.
China is in favor of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Beijing has also proposed its own peace plan. However, Ukraine's representatives criticized it because it provides for concessions.
During his speech in Davos, US President Donald Trump said he hoped for China's help to end Russia's war against Ukraine. Last week Trump had a phone conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
