China supports all efforts aimed at ending hostilities and creating conditions for a "political settlement of the crisis" between Ukraine and Russia, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a briefing.
"In the issue of the Ukrainian crisis (this is how China officially refers to Russia's war against Ukraine — ed.), China's position has been and remains consistent and clear," Lin Jian said.
The Chinese diplomat said this in response to a request to comment on Ukraine's new proposal for a ceasefire starting May 6.
"China calls on all parties to the conflict to make maximum efforts to create conditions for a political settlement of the crisis through dialogue and negotiations," the spokesperson added.
Ukraine-Russia ceasefire
Last week, Russia's Ministry of Defense said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin ordered a ceasefire with Ukraine on May 8–9 in honor of Victory Day.
At the same time, Russia threatened that if the celebrations were disrupted by attacks, a "massive missile strike" would be carried out on the center of the Ukrainian capital.
In response to this initiative, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would introduce a ceasefire with Russia starting at 00:00 on May 6.
However, during the night and morning of May 6, Russians attacked several Ukrainian cities, thereby violating the ceasefire. Fighting on the front line also did not stop.
Zelenskyy said that Russia had disrupted the ceasefire. Ukraine will determine further actions based on evening reports from the military and intelligence.
