China firmly denied reports of active tariff talks with the United States, refuting recent statements by President Trump about possible progress, reports AP News.

Despite recent comments from President Donald Trump, who suggested US-China relations were on track and that tariffs might be reduced, Chinese officials insist that no such discussions are taking place.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated, "For all I know, China and the US are not having any consultation or negotiation on tariffs, still less reaching a deal."

Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong reinforced this, saying, "Any claims about the progress of China-US trade negotiations are groundless as trying to catch the wind and have no factual basis."

While President Trump told reporters that "everything's active" with China, his own treasury secretary noted there are no formal talks underway.

China made clear it would only enter discussions "on the basis of mutual respect and in an equal manner," emphasizing its consistent position.

Tariff standoff escalates as both sides trade economic blows

Following the Trump administration's decision to impose a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, Beijing retaliated with 125% tariffs on US products and additional restrictions, such as limiting rare earth mineral exports and filing cases at the World Trade Organization.

The United States granted other countries a temporary pause on tariffs for negotiation, but not China, which responded by vowing to "fight to the end."

Chinese officials stressed that any negotiations should begin with a full removal of US-imposed tariffs.

"If the United States really wants to solve the problem, it should… completely cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China and find ways to resolve differences through equal dialogue," said He Yadong.

Despite optimistic statements from Washington, the trade impasse continues as both sides stand firm on their demands.

Trump's escalating tariff war is already sending shockwaves through the global economy and raising concerns about a looming economic crisis.
