Chrystia Freeland has resigned as Canada’s Transport Minister and may become the country’s Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney thanked Freeland for her outstanding service in the cabinet of Canada’s federal government over the past decade.

According to the Canadian Prime Minister, Freeland’s leadership helped secure "historic trade negotiations, to guide the responses to a global pandemic, to complete early learning and child care agreements across Canada, and most recently, to remove all federal barriers to internal trade."

"I have asked Chrystia to serve as Canada’s new Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine in addition to her responsibilities as a member of Parliament," he added.

Carney emphasized that as a former Minister of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and International Trade with deep ties to and understanding of Ukraine and its economy, Freeland is "uniquely positioned for this timely and essential work towards a better future for Ukrainians and peace in Europe."

Rumors about Freeland’s resignation

Earlier, CBC reported, citing its own sources, that Chrystia Freeland would step down as transport minister. Sources added that she could become a special envoy for Ukraine.

Chrystia Freeland’s mother, Halyna Chomiak, was born to a Ukrainian family in Germany.
