Head of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev spoke about the possibility of destroying Belgium. The country’s Defense Minister Theo Francken called on the Russian politician to calm down, reports Politico.
Earlier this week, in an interview with the Belgian news site HUMO, Francken promised that NATO would “flatten Moscow” if the Kremlin ever attacked Brussels.
This sparked a heated reaction from Medvedev, who called the Belgian defense chief an “imbecile” and warned that this week, Russia had tested its nuclear superweapon Poseidon, calling it a “true doomsday weapon.”
In response to a comment on X suggesting that Belgium could be used as a testing ground, Medvedev added: “Then Belgium will disappear.”

And this morning, Francken responded to Medvedev on Instagram.
“Russia's bully-in-chief never stops threatening and insulting. NATO is not at war with the Russian Federation, and certainly doesn't want to be ... But the 'strike back' principle of our alliance has been undisputed for 76 years. That's what I meant in the HUMO interview, and I don't retract a word of it,” he wrote.
Francken’s post was published under the song Calm Down by American singer Selena Gomez, which can be seen as the Belgian minister’s call for the Kremlin to calm down.
Poseidon tests
Earlier this month, Russian president Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia had allegedly successfully tested the underwater nuclear drone Poseidon.
According to him, this weapon is equipped with a nuclear power unit that “can be launched within minutes or seconds.”
Putin made this statement just a few days after Russia announced successful tests of the Burevestnik missile, which allegedly can reach any point in the world.
Soon after, the Center for Countering Disinformation explained the real purpose of his statement.
