Borrell: Ukraine should be allowed to strike deep into Russia, but not everyone agrees yet
Western countries should allow Ukrainian forces to strike deep into Russia using the weapons provided. However, there is no consensus on this issue yet, stated EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell following his participation in the UN General Assembly.
"I also reiterated the call to let Ukraine target airports and launch pads inside Russia with Western weapons. Let Ukraine strike the archers, not just the arrows! Not everybody agrees on that measure yet," he said.
He reminded that Western countries have pledged to support Ukraine with everything it needs for as long as necessary.
Borrell also emphasized that the "energy front" will be decisive this winter.
Background
Western allies prohibit Ukrainian forces from using long-range missiles provided to attack Russian territory.
Recently, media reports suggested that the US and the UK had allegedly decided to lift this restriction for Ukraine. It was expected that official statements would follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the US.
However, the situation has not changed yet, and Ukrainian forces remain restricted in using Western missiles.
Ukrainian President's press secretary, Serhii Nykyforov, remarked that the first to know about the approval for strikes deep into Russia would be the Russians themselves.
