On Sunday, June 15, the bodies of another 1,200 deceased citizens were returned to Ukraine. This marks the fourth stage of repatriation following the negotiations in Istanbul, according to the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner of War Affairs on Telegram.

"Another 1,200 bodies, which the Russian side claims belong to Ukrainian citizens, including servicemen, have been returned to Ukraine," the statement said.

Examinations to identify the deceased will be conducted by law enforcement agencies and expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The repatriation was made possible thanks to the cooperation of the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner of War Affairs, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service (SES), and other structures of Ukraine’s security and defense sector.

Prisoner exchange

During the second round of negotiations in Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia agreed on a second large-scale prisoner exchange. The parties agreed to return the wounded, seriously ill, and prisoners aged 18 to 25.

Prisoner exchanges took place on June 9, 10, and 12, and most recently on June 14. Among those released yesterday were soldiers held captive since 2022, including defenders of Mariupol, as well as officers.

In Istanbul, Ukraine and Russia also agreed on the return of bodies of the deceased under the "6000 for 6000" formula. Repatriation efforts took place on June 11 and 13. Additionally, yesterday 1,200 bodies of the deceased were returned to Ukraine.
