Biden uncertain about peaceful transfer of power if Trump loses
US President Joe Biden has stated in an interview with CBS News that he is not confident about a peaceful transfer of power if Donald Trump loses the 2024 presidential elections.
In the first interview since announcing he would not run for re-election, Biden addressed the threat posed by former US President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump.
When asked if he was confident there would be a peaceful transfer of power in January 2025, Biden replied that he wasn't.
“If Trump loses, I'm not confident at all. He means what he says. We don't take him seriously. He means it, all the stuff about, 'If we lose, there'll be a bloodbath, it'll have to be a stolen election.' Look what they're trying to do now in the local election districts where people count the votes,” Biden said.
US elections
The US presidential elections will take place on November 5, 2024. The newly elected president and vice president usually assume office on January 20 of the following year, after the inauguration (in this case, January 20, 2025).
The main candidates for the presidency this year are US Vice President Kamala Harris (Democrats) and former President Donald Trump (Republicans), who has refused to acknowledge his loss in 2020 and has questioned the legitimacy of the election results.
Both candidates have agreed to debates but under different conditions. Trump has stated he is waiting for Harris on September 4 on Fox News, while Harris' team has declined and insists the debate should occur on September 10 on ABC News, as previously planned (when Biden was a likely candidate).
